Mosaic, as a traditional art style of Europe, had been an important art form in Tigris and Euphrates, ancient Greece and Rome until the medieval Renaissance. It is also an influential art form crossing over Eurasia and in the whole world. There is also a long history and tradition of mosaic in China. This exhibition blends Chinese and Western mosaics, showing bold technological innovations and reflecting the innovative trend through the artistic works with different styles and features.
Professor Wang Yingsheng mentioned in the interview that, “This exhibition is held at the Art Museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts, and during the preparation process of it, we strive to make the works not only at the level of copying and media conversion, but we also hope to incorporate mosaic as an art form with a profound tradition into the framework of contemporary Chinese fine arts. We respect the aesthetic characteristics of materials and at the same time give full play to the individuality and subjective initiative of the artists for them to use materials creatively and make their reflections with materials, constantly exploring the deep sense of beauty of materials, which will undoubtedly becomes a new idea to expand and enrich the creative language of murals. We also specially invited some mosaic collections to participate in the exhibition in the final exhibition of Mosaic China in order for more people to feel the relationship between the extension of mosaic and the their way of life. It further proves that mosaic comes from ancient times and it has been integrated into contemporary life, which is an art of revitalization and an art full of vitality.”
