Large-scale artistic mosaic mural · Cultural heritage installation
Based on a century of Macau’s historical memory, this work was created by renowned Macao artist Liao Wenchang. Through mosaic craftsmanship, JNJMosaic transforms a cross-temporal historical narrative into a permanent spatial expression. Architecture, human figures, and collective urban memory together form a cultural portrait of Macau.

THE STORY
Cities are built not only with architecture, but with memory.
Created by renowned artist Liao Wenchang, a respected member of the Chinese Artists Association and Vice President of the Macau Fine Arts Association, this mural captures the historical landscape and cultural spirit of Macau through an expansive visual narrative.
The artwork reconstructs over a century of Macau’s urban memory through the lens of Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (New Road) and the historic Hotel Central — two symbols deeply woven into the city’s modern identity.
Like a journey through time, the mural traces Macau’s transformation through architecture, people and everyday life.
SPATIAL STORYTELLING
New Road
Serving as the visual spine of the composition, New Road unfolds across the mural as a historical timeline.
Rows of iconic arcaded buildings are carefully recreated, reflecting Macau’s unique urban texture where Eastern and Western cultures intersect.
Rather than documenting architecture alone, the artwork reconstructs an entire atmosphere.
Hotel Central Macau
At the center of the composition stands the historic New Central Hotel.
More than a building, it acts as a witness to the city’s transformation — reflecting changing eras, social memory and Macau’s evolving urban identity.
Architecture becomes a storyteller.
Historical Figures
Throughout the mural, many of Macau’s influential historical figures quietly emerge within the narrative.
Some once walked the bustling streets of New Road; others left their mark through stories tied to the New Central Hotel.
Together, they transform the mural from a cityscape into a living cultural portrait.
THE CRAFT CHALLENGE
Photorealistic Portraits Reimagined in Mosaic
Realistic portraiture remains one of the greatest challenges in mosaic craftsmanship.
Unlike abstract compositions, human expression relies on subtle structural accuracy and nuanced transitions. Every facial contour, shadow and gesture required careful interpretation through mosaic language.
Fragmented material had to preserve emotional realism.
Oil Painting-Inspired Color Recreation
The original artwork featured rich oil painting textures and highly nuanced tonal variation.
To faithfully reproduce these effects, JNJMosaic developed extensive colour calibration systems, including custom-fired materials for specific tonal requirements.
The challenge was not individual colour accuracy — but maintaining visual harmony across the entire mural.
Mastery of Both Monumental Scale and Intricate Detail
Mosaic naturally breaks imagery into thousands of individual fragments.
Without precise supervision, the artwork could easily lose overall rhythm and continuity.
The project required continuous adjustment between close-up craftsmanship and long-distance visual reading — balancing detail with composition.
CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGE
15cm Installation Clearance
Installation conditions introduced an entirely new layer of complexity.
Part of the mural area was obstructed by an elevator structure, leaving only 15cm of workable installation space — far below conventional construction requirements.
To overcome this limitation, sections were first positioned on aluminum panels before final wet-installation methods completed the remaining areas on site.
Pattern alignment and visual continuity demanded extremely high positioning accuracy.
A millimeter of error would affect the entire composition.
What this means for your project
Projects rooted in culture require more than material execution.
They demand the ability to translate artistic intention into architectural permanence — preserving emotion, narrative and historical memory through craftsmanship.
At JNJMosaic, mosaic is not simply an applied surface.
It becomes a medium through which stories endure.
